Adam Ackerman, co-founder and CMO of BioBottles USA, describes himself as “a free thinker and creative that has a special talent for seeing what others have not.” Specializing in brand creation, marketing, strategic thinking and business development, Ackerman said he is excited to use his skills to bring BioBottles and PlasticIQ Technology to the packaging industry and beyond as he looks to pioneer responsible packaging solutions that are both good for brands, consumers and the planet.

Question: What are BioBottles? How did the company get started?

Answer: BioBottles and BioCaps are an environmentally responsible packaging solution designed specifically for the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and personal care industries. We have developed a proprietary process in which we integrate what we call PlasticIQ technology into virgin resin or post-consumer resin (PCR) at the time of manufacturing.

BioBottles and BioCaps look, feel and perform just like an ordinary plastic bottle or cap. In the unlikely chance a BioBottle or BioCap isn’t recycled or finds its way outside a contained environment such as a landfill, PlasticIQ technology kicks in. When exposed to the right environmental conditions, such as UV sunlight and oxygen, Biobottles and BioCaps go through a process called BioTransformation.

BioTransformation converts the plastic into a substance that is no longer considered plastic by breaking down the molecular weight and composition of the plastic, turning it into a waxy like material. At this stage the microorganisms, fungi and bacteria identify this material as a natural food source and begin to colonize it. Consuming and then excreting it as biomass, CO2 and water, which are healthy and safe for the environment. Because the plastic has been bio-transformed into a material that is no longer plastic, and is consumed and excreted by microorganisms, there are no harmful microplastics left behind. Compare that to traditional plastic bottles that will remain on this earth for the next 450-plus years that leave harmful and poisonous microplastic behind.

We started BioBottles to solve a major problem we saw in the nutraceutical industry and it expanded to others along the way. Every year there are about 100 billion plastic bottles produced just for the supplement industry alone. We know based on the data only about 17 percent of these bottles are ever recycled, and another 70 percent will end up in landfills. What about the 13 percent that escape and end up as pollution? Currently there is no plan for that, so we enhanced a technology that has been around for the past 20 years primarily being used in other countries.

The U.S., like in most things, is late to the party. We are on a mission to educate consumers, brands and manufacturers that a technology currently exists right now that can completely change the landscape of one of the worst polluting industries. The earth gives us everything we need to live a healthy and abundant life, yet we give it back hundreds of millions of bottles of pollution in return. We need to all change this narrative together.

Question: What types of products can be packaged in BioBottles?

Answer: We currently offer PlasticIQ technology in the following products: bottles, caps, scoops, plastic wrapping film and soon to be labels. Other industries are in the works. If you have an idea or suggestion, please don’t hesitate to connect with us to discuss.

Question: Is there a downside to BioBottles? What about the cost?

Answer: There is no downside to transitioning to a BioBottle or BioCap. Compositing is actually more harmful than utilizing our technology. PlasticIQ seamlessly integrates into the current manufacturing equipment and process. This helps keep costs way down compared to other so called eco-friendly solutions. There is a slight increase in cost, but it really is insignificant when analyzing the overall benefits for the brand and the environment.

Question: What companies are using this packaging? Is that growing?

Answer: We are excited to share that we have a lot of early adopters transitioning to BioBottles and BioCaps. Due to confidentiality, we cannot share additional details at this time, but they are household brands. With hundreds of other brands assessing their sustainability goals in the coming months and years, BioBottles and BioCaps are a wonderful solution to pollution.

Question: What should natural product retailers know about BioBottles?

Answer: We would love everyone to know that the technology exists today to make serious and meaningful change. We have an obligation to do the right thing if it makes financial and environmental sense. BioBottles and BioCaps check all of those boxes. We need ambassadors to help us spread the word and remove as many non-BioBottles from the market as we can.

Question: What is the consumer demand for eco-friendly, sustainable packaging?

Answer: The data is in and it’s crystal clear that consumers now more than ever are demanding that brands be more sustainable. That can come in many different forms and fashion, but packaging is a big component of any product and how it is delivered to the consumer. Plastic is actually a great thing if used responsibly and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, but we can be responsible with how we manage and use it. BioBottles and BioCaps are just another way in which we are changing the landscape in a positive way forever.
