Probiotic with spore-forming capabilities could help alleviate symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)

Heyndrickxia coagulans SANK70258 supplementation led to an increase in anti-inflammatory effects through higher levels of butyrate in the intestine.

Scientists from Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and Doujin Memorial Foundation Meiwa Hospital, in Frontiers in Immunology, reported that during the intervention period, individuals in the H. coagulans group experienced lower URTI-related symptoms than those in the placebo group.

Heyndrickxia coagulans was previously known as Bacillus coagulans.

This study contributes to the growing evidence supporting the immune benefits of specific probiotic strains. The gut contains a significant percentage of the body’s immune cells, and the gut microbiome plays a crucial role in immune system regulation.

Study details

The study included 79 participants who were assigned to receive daily H. coagulans supplements or placebo for eight weeks. Results showed a significant reduction in URTI symptoms in the probiotic group compared to placebo.

Individuals in the probiotic group also showed increased levels of salivary sIgA and potential improvement in NK cell activity. Butyrate levels were higher in the probiotic group, and further tests demonstrated suppressed inflammation markers in PBMCs.

The researchers noted a decrease in cortisol levels in the probiotic group, suggesting a potential role in stress reduction.
