Cosmoperine® enhances permeation through skin surface

bioperine

Cosmoperine® is Tetrahydropiperine (THP), prepared from piperine (found in black pepper and long pepper) by a patented proprietary process. It acts as a penetration enhancer, increasing the absorption of drugs and nutrients through the skin.

Cosmetic active ingredients have enhanced permeation, enhancing their effectiveness. Its use in improving the skin penetration of active compounds is also covered by the patent. This product is non-irritating to the skin, GMO free and Kosher and Halal certified.

Cosmoperine®, also known as tetrahydropiperine (THP), is derived from piperine, the active principle of black peppercorns (Piper nigrum) which acts as a penetration enhancer when added to water soluble ingredients. It works by enhancing the bioavailability of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, coenzymes, and nutraceutical herbal extracts. An increase in topical permeation was shown when combining Cosmoperine with products like Green Tea extract; an antioxidant rich in polyphenols, Coleus Forskohlli Extract; a skin conditioning agent and Tetrahydrocurcumin; derived from Curcuminoids as extracted from Turmeric Root, acting as a potent antioxidant. One study showed an enhanced absorption of 30% in Vitamin C and Beta Carotene.

While at present there is insufficient experimental data to determine the actual mechanism of THP’s bioenhancing properties, it is postulated that THP may operate by increasing either the membrane’s fluidity and/or the affinity of the nutrient to the cell membrane. THP is also a lipophilic compound and may therefore increase solubilization of the intracellular lipid moiety in the skin, making it more permeable to the applied nutrient.
