Sonoran University Presents Honorary Degree to “Queen of Retailing” Sandy Gooch

On Dec. 18, Sonoran University of Health Sciences (formerly Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine) in Tempe, AZ, presented an honorary degree to Sandy Gooch, the “Queen of Retailing” and a pioneer in the natural food market industry, during its commencement ceremony.

In 1976, Gooch opened Mrs. Gooch’s Natural Food Store, the largest market of its kind in the country specializing in natural food and health-related items. She was also the first woman to develop a chain of supermarkets in America, with seven markets in the Greater Los Angeles area, according to the university.

Gooch’s stores were some of the first to carry products without harmful chemicals, preservatives, artificial flavorings, artificial colorings, artificial sweeteners and a plethora of other additives.

After suffering a life-threatening reaction to a combination of many of the commonly used food additives, Gooch had to eliminate all additives from her diet. With a lack of natural foods available, Gooch started her business and expanded her operation over the next 16 years. Her business grew to a $90 million per year operation.

In September 1993, Gooch sold her company to Whole Foods Market, which is now owned by Amazon.

Gooch is still active in the industry, continuing to advocate for women in business and natural and organic products.
