Precision Fermentation Protein

There were numerous protein innovations on display, including plant protein solutions claiming improved flavor and texture profiles, as well as fermented options offering additional health benefits.

At Arla Foods Ingredients, Jeppe Sand Laursen, head of global sales, highlighted the company’s fermented whey protein drink concepts​ in various ‘kombucha-like’ flavors. These drinks provide the benefits of whey protein along with refreshing flavors and digestive benefits from fermentation.

He stated, “We believe this product will appeal to a niche market with significant opportunity due to its novelty.”

Vicky Davies, global marketing director for performance, active, and medical nutrition at FrieslandCampina Ingredients, highlighted the increased interest in precision fermentation-produced proteins for their added health benefits.

FrieslandCampina showcased its new Biotis Fermentis ingredient​ developed for sports nutrition, which combines protein, prebiotics, and probiotics to target the gut-muscle axis effectively.

The company also presented its Nutri Whey ProHeat ingredient, a heat-stable whey protein designed for the medical nutrition market, providing the benefits of whey protein in a liquid form with appealing sensory properties.

Discussing other trends, Davies emphasized the gut-brain axis and cognitive health as significant focuses for consumers.

Cognitive Concerns

Tony Gay, technical sales director for nutrition at Prinova, discussed the cognitive health trend and the demand for natural adaptogenic ingredients to enhance mental clarity and focus across different consumer groups.

Prinova showcased a variety of formats for different audiences to integrate cognitive health ingredients into their daily routines. They highlighted drinks targeting younger and older consumers with the same active ingredient blend in different flavors.

Dr. Stephan Theis from the Beneo Institute focused on Beneo’s prebiotic fibers from chicory root, citing their significant positive impact on mood.

Consumer interest in gut health and its effects on the gut-brain axis was highlighted as an important consideration for consumers.

Plant-Based Beauty

Alexia Juban Boiron, business manager at Robertet, discussed the beauty-from-within trend and showcased Lipowheat, a plant-based alternative to collagen.

Boiron explained​ how Lipowheat naturally restores ceramides essential for skin health. They recently launched an emulsion format for easier integration into ‘beauty shot’ drinks.

Several vegan collagen alternatives were also featured at the event, including Protec Nutra’s plant-based collagen alternative ‘Vollagen.’

Rousselot’s Florencia Moreno Torres discussed the versatility of Peptan collagen in various formats, highlighting the importance of daily consumption for optimal health benefits.

Women’s Health

Sebastien Bornet from Horphag Research noted the prominence of women’s health trends, encompassing various concerns from menstrual discomfort to cognitive function.

Gelita highlighted the growing interest in gut health and menopausal health for women, aligning with the active ageing trend and the emphasis on health through exercise.
