Question: Boiron is celebrating its 40th Anniversary in the U.S. Please discuss the company’s origins and its move to the U.S. marketplace.
Answer: It all started in France with an adventurous and entrepreneurial spirit. In 1932, pharmacists and twin brothers Jean and Henri Boiron began producing homeopathic medicines to meet the demand of French doctors who were looking for quality products for their patients. They developed a rigorous production process for homeopathic medicines, which at the time were prepared manually by doctors. Their goal was to guarantee the reliability, efficacy and reproducibility of action of these medicines. Today we have 23 subsidiaries and operate in 50 countries. Boiron moved into the U.S. marketplace in 1983 with the acquisition of Borneman and Sons. As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, our mission remains the same—to improve the quality of life for everyone through homeopathy.
Question: The company is the leading manufacturer of homeopathic medicines worldwide. Please discuss that distinction.
Answer: Our expertise in homeopathic medicines has been developed for more than 90 years. Our manufacturing is subject to very strict regulations and complex technological considerations. Using the latest technology and constant innovation, we have developed high-performance manufacturing methods that ensure our medicines’ reliability. Each stage of our manufacturing process, from raw materials to finished product, is constantly controlled, and tested to guarantee that every medicine is the best quality possible. As a result, we maintain the highest standards in manufacturing, complying with FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) drug regulations, the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the U.S. and the drug good manufacturing practices (GMPs).
Question: What is Boiron’s commitment to environmental issues? What are its green practices?
Answer: Boiron has a strong sense of obligation to the environment. We champion efforts to preserve it in our community here and around the world because respect for nature is at the core of everything we do. To better ensure the sustainability of botanical species and to promote biodiversity in the plants that we use for our medicines, we partner with highly qualified and certified harvesters. Other eco-friendly initiatives like recycling, and our efforts to limit waste, water consumption and pollution are imbued throughout our French production sites and subsidiaries worldwide. In the U.S., our Simi Valley, CA and Newtown Square, PA locations now have electric vehicle charging stations in their parking lots. Simi Valley is powered by solar panels, and we have conservation and energy optimization efforts in place at both locations.
Question: What are the company’s goals for the future?
Answer: We will continue our tireless efforts to provide quality education to all, whether a beginner or an expert in homeopathy. For retailers in particular, we will carry on developing webinars and trainings to equip them with the homeopathic knowledge they need to serve their customers well.
We also will remain committed to a holistic vision of health—one that heals without harm. Throughout our history, we have made it an economic and ethical priority to plant the seeds of homeopathy around the world. Boiron’s philosophy is intrinsically based on respect for the person and for nature. In the future, we will continue to advance homeopathy with a respectful and humane approach to medicine along with the scientific rigor and manufacturing standards that guarantees high-quality homeopathic medicines for our retailers, health care practitioners and consumers.
Question: What should retailers keep in mind about recommending and selling homeopathic medicines?
Answer: In recent years, consumers concerned about safety have been pulling back on their use of traditional over-the-counter medications and are turning to homeopathic solutions for their self-care. Homeopathic medicines respect the body and the environment and can be given as a first-line treatment for many everyday ailments. Homeopathic medicines use highly diluted substances, like plants and minerals, that work with the body to help restore balance and do not mask or suppress symptoms. They will not cause drowsiness or sleeplessness and have no known drug interactions with supplements, herbs or other medications, making them ideal for use even in young children and older adults. Retailers can introduce customers to homeopathy by recommending something as simple as arnica pellets or gel for their medicine cabinet.
